Amazonite – Centered in the Heart

I first met Amazonite at the Moorefield Gem Mine in Amelia Virginia many years ago. My husband, son and I took a day trip to collect rocks, one of my favorite pastimes. With buckets in hand we set out to the mine dumps to start collecting. There was a nice pile of fresh dirt dumped from the mine and we picked and dug. They also had a sluice to wash dirt and find other gemstones. We went home that day with several buckets of amazonite, some nice mica books along with some gem quality amethyst and garnets. Not too bad for a day of family fun. I will never forget the adventure we shared that day along with the muddy pants and sneakers.

Amazonite is a blueish green microline feldspar crystal belonging to the triclinic crystal system. Triclinic crystals have three axes of unequal length and all are inclined to one another at different angles. On the Mohs Hardness scale, Amazonite is around 6 to 6.5 in hardness equal in comparison to a knife blade or a steel file.

Amazonite got its name from the Amazon River in South America. It is found in areas of Colorado and Virginia here in the states and also in Brazil, Australia and Madagascar. It dates back to the time of Ancient Egypt and was found in the tomb of King Tut in amulets, rings, and other ornamental objects.

Amazonite has many healing properties. It has a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system and acts as a filter for pollution of all kinds. It is associated with the throat and heart chakras, it helps balance the heart and thyroid gland as well as assists with intuition, inner vision and helps bring universal love into manifestation.

The Amazonite used to make pendants at the Light Ray Center are from the hand picked buckets from my family outing. By enhancing it with the conductive properties the copper, we not only bring out its natural beauty but also magnifies the energy of truth, honor, integrity and greater healing properties of the this magnificent crystal to all those who choose to wear it.
