Flames have been used as a tool for purification and healing since the beginning of time. The practice is called “candle gazing” and involves staring directly into the candle flame, with eyes open or closed. When used with intention, candle gazing can be a powerful ally in tapping into our higher selves and recalibrating our energy. Its ability to cleanse and renew both our physical and energetic bodies makes it the perfect tool for those seeking to release old patterns and wounds. When we allow the flames of a fire to consume our old pain, we make space for new energy and possibilities to enter our lives.
Candle gazing is something that can be done anywhere at any time so long as you have access to an unlit candle and some time alone. It is one of the easiest ways for beginners to get started with meditation and many people find that it helps them clear their minds and drift off into another state of consciousness or even enter an altered state of awareness where they are able to tap into their own inner resources for healing, relaxation or stress relief.
It’s easy to fall into a trance when gazing at a flickering candle flame. If you’re interested in giving this unique meditation tool a try, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, it’s important to create a sacred space for your fire meditation. This can be done by setting up an altar with candles, incense, and any other items that hold personal meaning for you. Please follow all safety precautions when it comes to burning candles.
Select one candle that will be your flame. Hold the candle in your hands and bring it to your heart. Set your intention for the self-healing that you are going to experience. If you have a favorite essential oil, you can anoint the candle. Light your candle, find a comfortable place to sit, and allow yourself to relax. Focus your eyes on the flame and begin to breathe deeply. As you inhale, imagine the flame entering your body and filling you with light. With each exhale, release any tension, worry, or stress you may be holding onto. Continue to breathe deeply until you feel yourself entering a state of deep relaxation. Let the flickering of the flame be your guide.
